Cottage Pie

I found this recipe while cruising allrecipes.com. It sounded like a great meal to eat on a cold Chicago evening. This recipe was based on the one found here.

Cottage Pie

Ingredients
4 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
1 tablespoon butter
onion powder
1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 lb lean ground beef

1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce

2 tablespoons flour
1 packet brown gravy mix

1 cup water

1 tablespoon ketchup

1 bag frozen mixed veggies

1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Directions

Bring a large pot of salted water to boil. Add potatoes and cook until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and mash. Mix in butter, onion powder and salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.

Heat oil in pan. Add onion and garlic; cook until onion is clear. Add ground beef and cook until completely browned. Remove excess fat and add Worcestershire sauce and flour; heat through.
Add gravy mix, water, ketchup and veggies. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes or until thickened.

Spread ground beef mixture evenly into a 2-quart casserole dish. Spread mashed potatoes on top of ground beef and sprinkle with cheese.
Bake at 375° for 20 minutes or until potatoes are golden brown.

Amanda's Analysis:

I loved this dish! It's fairly simple to make and is great comfort food. It also keeps well and makes great leftovers. The only think I would tweak is the flavoring of the beef mixture. I think it needs a little more spice. This is definitely a nice warm meal for a cold evening. I give it 6 spoons!

John's Jibba-Jabba:

This was a nice hearty dish. I think the potatoes could have used some jazzing up though. I also think it would be good with ground turkey as a healthier alternative. I give it 5 spoons.
